So many people had been died and all the houses flooded.

Siraj: Have you ever seen this kind of devastating storm?

No, I have never seen such storm like Aila.

Siraj: What is your name?

My name is Laily. At first, we had seen the water was coming under the bed of my home. Then water had flooded everything from our home. We have nothing now. We are having very tough time now. We have taken a shelter for this time only. There are number of families living on the roadside. You know, there was a mother with a child, has died and unfortunately we could not bury her body, we just covered her body.

Siraj: How did you notice that storm is coming?

We had seen that little water is coming through the pond and asked to each other that what is going on here. At that time, devastating storm had already cleared everything behind us. We could not expect that it would happen! It was our beyond expectation. Everything was submerged and we could not get out of our home. We did not have time to evacuate the house even.

Siraj: Do you know the quantity of salinity in the water after the Aila?

Oh, it is too high than normal quantity. In addition, the color of the water is black which leads to skin diseases. We have never seen such type of water before.

Siraj: Is there salinity in the tube well water also?

Tube well water is also affected after Aila storm by the fatal salinity. One tube well might be free of this out of thousand.

Siraj: How do you fulfill the need of fresh water for drinking and other household work?

There is fresh tube well water far way from our home. We need to go there for the fresh water. In addition, it is very tough job for us.

Siraj: Is trees are affected for this salinity?

There are plenty of trees died and become bitter.

Siraj: Where do you live now?

We live in the cyclone centre of a school.

সিরাজ: এর আগে এমন ঝড় দেখছেন?

এর আগে এমন ঝড় আর পানি দেখিনি। এই নতুন দেখছি।

সিরাজ: আপনার নাম কী?

আমার নাম লাইলি। প্রথম আমরা দেখতে পাইছি যে খাটের তল থেকে পানি আসছে। আমরা খাটের দিক তাকায় রইছি। এরপর দেখি পানি  এসে থালা বাসন সব ভাসায় নিয়ে গেছে। কোনো কিছু নেই এখন। আমরা খুব কষ্টে আছি এখন। এখন আমরা এক জায়গায় আস্তানা নিছি সেই জায়গায় থাকি কোনো ঘর বাড়িতে যাওয়ার কিছু নেই। আমরা কিছু পাচ্ছিও না। আমাদের অনেক কষ্ট। অনেক পরিবার আছে রাস্তার উপরে বাস করে। আর এক মহিলা ছিল বাচ্চা কোলে সে মহিলা মারা গেছে। সেই লাশ আমরা মাটি দিতে পারিনি। কোনোরকম কলার পাতায় বাইন্দে রাখছি।

সিরাজ: যেদিন ঝড় হইল আপনারা কেমনে টের পাইলেন?

আমরা দেখছি যে খাল দিয়ে অল্প অল্প পানি আইছে। কই এত পানি আসে কেন! পিছনের দিক এত তাকাইনি। পিছনের দিক এত তুফানে বাড়ি বাড়ি দিয়ে দিয়ে সব নিয়ে গেছে। আমরা বুজতে পারিনি যে এমন হবে। আমাদের বাড়িতো খালপাড়ে! পিছনের দিকতে তুফানে বাড়ি দিছে তারপর টের পাইছি। দেখি যে গাছ উচা হয়ে গেছে, সব ডুবে যাচ্ছে। যখন এই পানি ঘরের মধ্যে চলে আইসে তখন আর বের হইতে পারতেছিলাম না। অনেক লোক বের হইতে পারেনি।

সিরাজ: পানিতে লবণ কী পরিমান?

আগের থেকে অনেক লবণ বেশি এখন। আর কালো পানি। আর গায়ে লাগলে জ্বলে। আমাদেও চুলকোনি হইছে। এইরকম লবণ পানি আগে দেখিনি।

সিরাজ: কলের পানির মধ্যেও কি লবণ আছে?

আছে। হাজারকার একটা ভাল আর সব খারাপ।

সিরাজ: আগে এমন ছিল?

না, ছিল না। যে কলের পানি মিষ্টি খায়েছি সেটা এহন লবণ হয়ে গেছে। এক বছর বা ছয় মাস আগেও ভাল ছিল।

সিরাজ: এখন এই পানির সমস্যা কেমনে মিটান?

সে দূরে দূরে অনেক কল আছে সেইখান থেকে নিয়ে আসতি হয়, খুব কষ্ট হয়।

সিরাজ: এই লবণ বাইরা যাওয়ার কারণে কি গাছ-পালা মইরা গেছেনি?

প্রচুর গাছ-পালা মরে গেছে। কোনো গাছই তো নেই। সব মরে গেছে। যা গাছ আছে তাও সব তিতা হয়ে গেছে।

সিরাজ: এখন থাকেন কই?

ঐ সাক্লোন সেন্টার স্কুলে। পড়নের কাপড় ছাড়া আর কিছুই বাইর করতে পারি নাই।  সব ভাইস্যে গেছে। মানুষ হাত ধরে টাইনে ধরছে তাই বাইচেছি।

Before Aila storm, we thought it might be a normal storm like before as natural disaster attacks in southern part. However, the early warning signal was significant but we could not understand that devastating storm was going to attack at this area. We expected, this storm would have moved to Cox’s Bazar but from 10 am, morning storm was getting started seriously. Then from 3 to 3:30 pm onwards, the river water had got to start coming through very fast towards us, so we had got to understand that something is going to happen very bad and destructive with us and we had decided to return to our own destinations. The salinity of the water was fatal. All the tress of this area has destroyed after the Aila storm. Shrimp cultivation field has been destroyed and all the houses had fallen down. Domestic animals have died and the environment of the area was degraded. Crops have also destroyed. Our key source of the livelihood is shrimp business. All the shrimpfish was also floated.

আইলা শুরু হওয়ার আগে প্রথম প্রথম তো আমরা ভাবছিলাম যেভাবে দক্ষিণ এলাকায় ঝড়-বৃষ্টি আসে সেইধরনেরই কিছু কিন্তু সংকেত ছিল বড় আকারের, আমরা তো বুঝতে পারিনি যে এদিকটাই হবে। আমরা ভাবছি যে কক্সবাজার বা অন্যদিকে এই ঝড় চলে যাবে আশা করছিলাম। কিন্তু আস্তে আস্তে বাতাস বাড়তে বাড়তে ১০ টার দিকে খুব জোরালোভাবে ঝড় শুরু হয়। এরপর ৩ টে সাড়ে ৩টার দিক থেকে নদীর পানি এমন বেগে আসা শুরু করল যে, সেইসময় বুজা গেল বড় আকারের কোনো ধংসাÍক কিছু হবে; বুঝতে পেরে আমরা যার যার গন্তব্যস্থলে যাওয়া শুরু করি। এবং এই পানির লবনাক্ততা ছিল কঠিন আকারে। আমাদের গ্রামে আইলা আসার পর গাছ-পালা ধংস হয়ে গেছে একদম। ঘের গুলো ধংস হয়ে গেল। এলাকার লোকজনের কাঁচা ঘর-বাড়ি অধিকাংশ সব পড়ে গেল। পরিবেশের বিপর্যয় কঠিনভাবে হল বিশেষ করে গবাদি পশু, গরু-ছাগল সব মারা গেল। মানুষের ভিতর কেমন জানি আতংক ছড়ায় পড়ল। ফসলাদি যা ছিল তাও নষ্ট হয়ে গেল। আমাদের মেইন স¤পদ এই দক্ষিণ এলাকার হচ্ছে চিংড়ি। ফসল কম হয় কিন্তু কোটি কোটি টাকার ব্যবসা হয়। এগুলো সব আইলার পানিতে ভেসে গেল।

Amena Banu was telling her experience, wind was getting so furious before the Aila storm. Around eight or nine pm, the storm started and the raindrops were like fireball. If it touches our body, we felt like it is burning our skin. As my daughter had been having fever we moved to other place and after coming back, we saw that nothing was there at my home. My house had been ruined seriously and everything was just destructed. We have never seen such flood on this road. Nevertheless, now it is usual in this road. Now I have only a piece of land only for my livelihood.

Question: Does the salinity in water affect in your daily life?

All the trees are dead. Nothing is alive and cultivable now. So I am getting poorer. I had no cloth for wearing myself. It was a great loss for me. I had nothing. I have lost everything I had. When the wave was getting more strong and higher I instantly took a side behind the tree. After Aila storm, I took shelter in a place and after the storm military came and I got relief from them. They gave me 5000 taka for resilient my house. Now I live hand to mouth.

ঝড় উঠলে পিটপিট করে বাতাস বইতে লাগে। রাত আট-নয়টার দিকতে সেইত ঝড় আর ঝড়, আগুনের মত বৃষ্টি। সেই বৃষ্টি গায়ে পরলে ঠুসা পরে। সকালে আমার মেয়ের চলটা মারলো দোপরের পর থেকে জ্বর আরাম্ভ হলো, তার পরের দিন জ্বর ছাড়ে । জ্বর ছারায়া আমারা বাড়ি আসলাম। আইসা দেহি কিচ্ছু নাই। বিটেবাটা কিছু নাই সব দুয়ে গেছে। এই জায়গায় কোনদিন জল উঠে না। আজ কয় বছর ধরে জল উঠে। এখন আমার অল্প একটো জমি আছে লাগাই পাগাই খাই।

প্রশ্নঃ আইলার পানিতে যে লবণ ছিলো ঐ লবণটা কেমন ক্ষতি করছে।

গাছ গাছালি সব মরে গেছে কিছু আছে নাকি। কিছু নাই। আমার অভাব কাটে না। বেপক ক্ষতি হয়ছে, কিচ্ছু ছিল না। কাপর-চুপর কিচ্ছু ছিল না। ঐ সময় ঐ ঘর-দোয়ার কিচ্ছু ছিলনা।যখন বড় ডেউ তখন ঐ বড় গাছের আড়ালে আমি। গাছের আড়ালে ডোকে গেলাম। ঐ তার পরে আবার মেলেটারি আইলো, যাদের যম্মের ভিটা গেলো তাদের ৫০০০টাকা দিলো আমারেও দিলো। যা গোছাই তাই খাই এইভাবে দিন যায়।
