May Day Celebration

The international labor day – ‘May Day’ is the public holiday in Dhaka, Bangladesh. Bangladesh labor’s organizations regularly celebrated the day with rally, procession and ‘labor rights’ demand meetings. Bangladeshi human rights NGOs and activist organizations arrange series of program on the eve of May Day.

The big rally held in Purna Poltom area of Dhaka city. The video is showing worker’s organizations, particularly gar-ments worker’s association for their rights. In the video one labor worker activists explaining the history of May Dhaka and Bangladesh realities.

Disability Rights and Rickets Dangers in Bangladesh: Disable people don’t have minimum social recognition and rights surety In Bangladesh . As an indicator, if we observe school there is no presence and or positive options for disables students; and same scenario in the employments also. But in road side, traffic streets — we see them as beggars. It seems that they born only for begging. As a citizen disable people are not well recognized, don’t have surety of basic rights. General trends disable people are not human being…these practices need to change.

Grassroots Thinking on HIV

Grassroots Thinking on HIV/ AIDS in Bangladesh | বাংলাদেশে এইচআইভি / এইডস তৃণমূল পর্যায়ের চিন্তা:
This is the time to find out the way of “zero transmission” to stop geometrically spreading of HIV. As there is no clinical solution of HIV/AIDS epidemic, we have to find out the root case. UnnayanNews believe “majority people’s participation and involvement” is the best way to ascertain effective solution for any social problems including AIDS pandemic. On the eve of ‘AIDS day 2005 ‘we have produced ‘Grassroots thinking’, Bangladesh first web documentary on HIV/AIDS. The content of this documentary is uncensored opinions of the grassroots people. The duration of the documentary is 8.25 minutes. To represent the grassroots reality, we have focused on, “Muktagacha” and have recorded short interview of rickshaw puller, teacher, shopkeeper, artist, priest, student and youth group. Hope this small documentary will be useful to discover the present situation and trend of majority grassroots people knowledge, understanding and views about HIV/AIDS.

Community Mobilization

কমিউনিটি সংহতি: After long a movement on community radio establishment in Bangladesh, Bangladesh government has given permission to open it. The Government has formulated the community radio policy and procedure for setting up community radio around the country.

Under this circumstances, AMIC, BNNRC and UNB jointly organized the seminar “Peoples Voices, Peoples Participation and Community Radio” in Dhaka on 04 May 2008.

Dr. Shamim Reza of Dhaka University presented a presentation on the ” Community Mobilization for Community Radio in Bangladesh”.

Bird Flu | বার্ড ফ্লু

The video on public health emergence of bird flu in Bangladesh. As part of safeness and public awareness on behalf of SIAM Health Foundation, Machizo Multimedia has produced this video production with series of interviews. From this month March the people particularly city dwellers get back confidence with promotion.

On January 2008, Bangladesh was dangerously panicked with bird flu. Although there was not not happened any human cased. The majority people was anxious, did not eat chicken even egg. The Poultry industry and business was collapsed . From the beginning government, media and concerned NGOs promote the issues as public health emergence and basic alerts to save both poultry industry and lives. With bird flu panic many chicken shops were closed for low sales and income.
STATEMENTS

“There was bird flu rumor. People did not want to take chicken but now buying. Now no problem and day by day fear is disappearing and selling is increasing. We are also eating. There is no problem after cooking…..” is the statement of a street chicken seller.

Dr. Sanjida Islam says, ” If we buy chicken after clean, however wash properly , there is problem. I would like to request all to eat with family members. Not only in chicken but also in ducks, there is not problem…”

Shamim Ara Begam, Assistant director of BSTI shared her confidence, “There is no logic to be panicked with bird flu as the virus die after boil; however it can not make infection in human body. So everyday, we are eating chicken. We never face any problem. However chicken is favorite menu of the children. I am not facing any problem.” Her son’s feedback is also same, “I everyday take eat and chicken. I know, the bird flu virus after boil die. so I am not panicked with bird flu.”

There was a huge negative affects in business and life style. We talked with many person to know the real situation. All expressed confidence including Anowarul Isalm Khan, Chief Bureau of Health Education, ” we are working to make public awareness to against any sensitive public disease. We have taken initiative from our head office and has given direction to health workers countrywide to make public awareness. It is not difficult to protect. If we follow general per-cautions . if we make healthy environment in poultry firm; however if we use, apron, mask and glops during duck-chicken rearing. Bird flue can dot spread even have. there is no problem. It is just panic”

Community Radio

কমিউনিটি রেডিও বাংলাদেশ: The community radio network could raises voice of voiceless by giving media access to the marginalized people across country access. The movement community radio in Bangladesh is actively going on since 1998. At last Bangladesh Government has responded positively with the movement lead by BNNRC, MMC, CDC, YPSA so on. The Government announced the policy on community radio in 12 March 2008. Under this circumstances, AMIC, BNNRC and UNB jointly organized a seminar on “Peoples Voices, Peoples Participation and Community Radio” in Dhaka on 04 May 2008.

At the daylong international seminar speakers from South Asian counties said, the community radio could give access the majority marginalized community particularly to the rural poor in information access. However the grassroots will be linked with media and will get options to participate in development process. The social communicator and South Asian leaders shared their experiences. The speakers discussed in detail the rules and procedures of the licensing system, however the provisions to ensure about ownership of information really remain within the community.

Information Secretary Jamil Osman, former BTRC Chairman Syed Margub Morshed, UNESCO’s Country Director Dr Malama Meleisea and Assistant Country Director of UNDP K A M Morshed addressed the inaugural session. Among others, Secretary General of AMIC Dr Indrajit Banerjee, Professor Brian Shoesmith, Dr. Andrew Taussig, Mohammad Nazrul Islam and Amanullah Khan addressed the session as well. AMIC Head of Research Dr Kalinga Seneviratne presented the keynote paper of the session titled “Overview of Community Radio across Asia: Opportunities and Challenges”. Dr. Shamim Reza of Dhaka University presented a presentation on the community radio in Bangladesh.
