SYNOPSIS

‘Chandana’ is a garment worker, and central character of the ‘JOBANBODI’ (Testimony ) short film. The Bengali word ‘Jobanbondi’ refers to the ‘testimony or statement’ of a person.

In the short film, Chandana as a representative of unprivileged garment workers, said the stories and realities of ‘Working-class Women and Girls’ in Bangladesh. The story has highlighted the rights, social views, and common realities of the marginalized, less-educated, and simple-minded female garments workers who generally come from the rural area.

Chandana said her story with deepheart touching words, which ‘Working Class Women’ generally can not say openly in Bangladesh like conservative society for their lower socio-economic position.

To express the ‘voice of the voiceless’, ‘words of mind’ and ‘social status’, the ‘Only One, Main Character’ – Chandana did not speak. She performmed acting in salient mode like a ‘Dumb’. Chandana said openly – about the exploitation, sexual harragement in workplace, injustice, maltreatment, lifestyle, love, desire, and hope for a good life of garment workers , who come to the city intending to lead a poverty-free good life.

The monochromic black and white visuals have been used in the short film to express the common reality for overcoming ‘time and space. The dark ash background of the film symbolizes the unwanted sorrowful social reality.

In the film, only one-time ‘Colored Visual’ has been used to express the dream of the girl to wear her own made dress, which they never can wear, but should get access to wear. The soft background music expresses the poverty-stricken life, helpless crude reality, simple mind, and inner language of the story.

The storytelling in the ‘Jobanbondi’ has been used with an experimental style by mixing the aspects of traditional narrative documentary and feature film. The audience may discover the inner message more from the film in their own way, by imagining the common realtieis of working class women happening arond the society.
