Bangladesh’s First Online Development Video Channel ( 2005-2008)

UnnayanTV

UnnayanTV was one of Bangladesh’s pioneering online video initiatives, launched in April 2005 to produce and distribute open-access educational and development-focused video content. At a time when online video publishing was still uncommon in Bangladesh due to limited internet infrastructure, the project successfully introduced web-based video distribution covering education, human rights, development, climate change, popular culture, and the lives of marginalized communities.

The platform served as an alternative media channel that documented underreported stories and amplified local voices often overlooked by mainstream media. Through documentaries and digital storytelling, UnnayanTV challenged stereotypical portrayals of Bangladesh and promoted a deeper understanding of the country’s culture, people, rights, and realities.

Operating as a non-profit initiative, UnnayanTV released all of its content as copyright-free open media for public and educational use. The project also provided free e-learning opportunities and training on social media, digital storytelling, and video communication for youth, activists, and development practitioners.

Originally inspired by the multimedia webzine UnnayanNews, the project pioneered online video publishing using self-hosted WMV video files during a period when video streaming technology was still in its early stages in Bangladesh. Despite financial and technical challenges, the initiative continued its mission under the motto “Changing Images, Changing Life.
