At a time when HIV was spreading rapidly around the world, it was essential to explore grassroots perspectives and identify effective ways to prevent transmission. With no definitive clinical cure for HIV/AIDS, understanding its root causes and strengthening public awareness and participation remain crucial.
UnnayanNews believes that the meaningful participation and involvement of ordinary people is essential to addressing major social challenges, including the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
On the occasion of World AIDS Day 2005, we produced “Grassroots Thinking”, Bangladesh’s first web documentary on HIV/AIDS. The documentary presents uncensored opinions and perceptions of grassroots people from Muktagacha, Mymensingh.
To reflect the realities of local communities, we interviewed a diverse group of people, including a rickshaw puller, teacher, shopkeeper, artist, priest, student, and members of a youth group.
This 8-minute-25-second documentary offers a snapshot of grassroots knowledge, understanding, attitudes, and concerns about HIV/AIDS at that time. We hope it will remain a useful record for understanding how communities perceived HIV/AIDS and how grassroots voices can contribute to finding effective solutions.
