Rathjatra | রথযাত্রা

Rathjatra, one of the biggest of Hindu mystical celebration in Bangladesh. This fifteen days long festival held every year across the Bangladesh and India. The jatra means rally with rath (van) of Lord Jogonnath. Nowadays Rathjatra celebration is not only limited to Hindu community, becomes part of mainstream Bengali culture. The main Rathjatra festival in Dhaka has been organized by international Society for “Krishna conciousness” (ISKON). In these days, the Hindu believers worship God “Jogonath” by pulling chariots (rath).

Thousands of people join in the festival with loving heart to God and humanity. Peoples pray for indemnity of past sins and offer donation, gift, food etc with total heart and devotion. Some believers join to relief from pain of mistakes, protection from diseases however for good fortune. During running the rath, the priest share out the offering banana. The participants receive banana as “Gift of God” and “Gift of Love”. However the fellowers sing theme holy song, “Harey Kisna, Harey Raam…” . In the Dhaka, the rally generally starts from ISKON to Dhakashori Temple. After ten day the rath again back to ISKON. Generally the Rathjatra held in the month June-July that is in Bangla ‘Srabon mas ‘.

‘O’ Sakhina | ও’ সখিনা

” O Sakhina… ” the song of Fakir Alamgir is one of the most popular song of Bangladesh. The folk singer Fakir Alamgir has established his own style of lyrics and form which is the blend of traditional folk song with western instruments. He has a number of popular albums are immensely popular Bangladesh and India. His songs, ‘O Sakhina’ are too popular that it become lip song of the mass people. Farkir Alamgir is the founder of ‘Wrishijo Shilpi Gosthi’.

Fakir Alamos most of song become widely popular across the country as all song carry the massage of the reality. He particularly emphasis on the reality, life struggle and vision of marginalized community with high voices. In the song ‘ O Sokhina’ he says, the story of a exploited farmer who have lost he crop to pay the loan and become a rickshaw puller. In the song the says the sotry as the voice of farmer himself to his lover ‘Sokhina’.

Rickshaw and Rickshawpuller

With aesthetic glimmer first rickshaw was emerged in Chittagong on 1919. In Dhaka rickshaw first appear on 1938. One landlord of Shutrapur ( old Dhaka ) first brought this vehicle in the capital. Once rickshaw was consider as gorgeous and highly recognized elite’s van, but now it become opposite. According to city corporation, there are seventy six thousand rickshaw in Dhaka. Nowadays Dhaka is famous as the city of rickshaw.

Bangladeshi rickshaw is artistic decorated by plastic flower, ornaments and rickshaw art. These arts are done by enamel colors, usually bold and vivid. In the back of rickshaw, there are beautiful paintings, generally grameen scenarios and Bangladeshi movie stars action portraits. After independence, as witnessed the paintings were portraying the liberation war’s scenes . The forms of rickshaw art are changing with contemporary mode of life, culture and reality. By emerging of the digital technology, the rickshaw art now is facing the struggle of existences. The rickshaw artists are generally illiterate and have no formal art education. However this high motif art is not well recognized by the mainstream schools of art.

Rickshaw pullers generally comes from the villages, mostly are economically marginalized. With vision of a good life and good income, the illiterate villagers migrant to Dhaka after fighting with poverty. But whenever they don’t get job, as last option they start rickshaw pulling and become rickshaw puller!

By doing whole day hard job, a rickshaw puller still can not earn proper money for quality existence. The average income to a rickshaw puller is Tk. 200 – Tk300 ( 3-5 dolor). Because of economical lower status, they can not develop their social position as well. However there is prejudice about rickshaw and rickshaw in elite society, mostly are not well recognized by in the society.

Rickshaw puller generally takes unhygienic food in the roadside restaurants. They generally live in slums or rickshaw-garish. Because of poverty, they can not make peaceful life and family, however can not send the children in school. But now the situation little changing and they are getting interested in family planning and children’s education. Bachelor rickshaw pullers generally live like a homeless to save money. Married rickshaw puller’s wife generally works as a housemate or as a garments worker to makeup the family costing. Common and crude reality, because of poverty mostly rickshaw pullers children can not continue education and become ricksha puller like father.

Grameen Concert

গ্রামীন গানের আসর: The Grameen concert which is locally known as ‘ghanar ashor’. Grameen song particularly ‘baul’ and ‘boiati’ generally perform the song with either spiritual or moral message. The grameen song wide follow the mystical form of song. In rural Bangladesh, grameen band know as, “Ganer Dol”. The main vocal is generally team leader, however composer him/herself.

Grameen ghanar dol widely used local musical instruments like Ektara, Harmonium, Tobla and Dukduki etc. The singers generally farmer in profession and occasionally sing son in leisure time particularly after harvest.

The signer mostly are respected in village as spiritual men for speeding ethical words, moral teaching and mystical practices through songs. As the economical reality, the singer can not take singing son as profession for livelihood and fighting with poverty. Because of this some of devotee singer follow stoic life and never marry.

In most of Ganer Dol, there is one or two young volunteer member. The become volunteer generally to learn form ‘ustat’ (teacher). During they help team leader and make chorus.

The popular grameen concert is locally known as ‘ghanar ashor’ which generally organized in the full moon night after harvesting. is a popular event of villagers’ entertainment. It is a popular culture in rural Bangladesh. With request, Abdur Rahman and his team sing a sing is home yard.

But still now in Bangladesh settle marriage is popular. The situations as well have been improved and have been given the priority of bride and bride groom’s liking by parents and relatives. Muslim faith based Bangladeshi society accepts the new culture and made own form with the harmonious combination of old and new practices. The Bangladeshi particularly middle class bride and bride groom want to start the family life with joy. They invite all friends and relatives however make a social gathering without boarder as much possible. As like as Eid day all family members and relatives try to join in the marriage ceremony. However the house has been decorated with colorful gate and lighting.

This is the common event now to arrange cultural show, performing songs and dance in marriage day. But most of songs are taken from popular Hindi movie. Sometime the bride and bridegroom also join in song and dance show, which was impossible in last decades.Because of easy access to digital media now all middle and higher class family do the video documentation of marriage events with bold video effect and cheerful Hindi song. So we have also used similar type of Hindi song in this “web documentary ” to share the real essence of modern marriage in Bangladesh.

Rural Eid

Eid is the most important religious festival of Muslim community. As a Muslim majority country, Bangladesh also celebrates every year Eid widely. How does the grassroots people celebrate the Eid? To record the reality and communal spirit of rural poor, we visited and celebrated eid with villagers of `Mujati` village in Mymensing district.

Approximately 9:30 at morning men and youth gathered at Eidgah (open air playground) on bank of river. In open environment the high volume mick`s sound speeded and reflected around the village and creates a festivities mode. Even though villagers can not understand Arabic lechers (Kudba) of Imam ( religious leader ), but they hear in pin drop silence by faith. During scriptures reading the community fund for mosque and imam was withdraw. Some poorest community members also asked money in this time. Although national holiday, but the rickshaw puller, shopkeeper don’t have rest. They do work with hope to income some more.

The conclusion, even though they are poor, has gender inequality, economical imbalance, conflicts but visionary, hopeful, live with faith and communal spirit. Few years before also in this village the education rate was very low, but within 10 year the scenario has been changed.

বই মেলা, প্রাণের মেলা । বাংলা একাডেমী প্রাঙ্গণে অনুষ্ঠিত এ মেলায় হাজার হাজার পাঠক ও সংস্কৃতি সেবী মানুষের সামাগম ঘটে সারা ফেব্রুয়ারী মাসব্যাপী । বাংলাদেশের প্রায় সব প্রকাশক ও লেখকগণ এ মেলা উপলক্ষ্যে বই প্রকাশ করে থাকে। ২০০৮ সালের বই মেলায় ২ হাজারেরও বেশী বই প্রকাশিত হয়েছে। শুধু বই প্রকাশ নয়, অমর একুশে গ্রন্থমেলা আজ পরিণত হয়েছে বাংলা সাহিত্য ও সংস্কৃতির গুরুত্বপূর্ন কেন্দ্র। বই বিক্রয়ের পাশাপাশি এই মেলায় বাংলা একাডেমী ধারাবাহিক ভাবে সমকালীন বাংলা সাহিত্য ও সংকৃতির উপর সেমিনার, আলোচনা অনুষ্ঠান আয়োজন করে থাকে।

আজকের এই গুরুত্বপূর্ণ মেলা প্রথম শরু হয়েছিল ১৯৭৩ সালে, মুক্তধারার প্রথিতযশা প্রকাশক চিত্তরজ্ঞন সাহার মুক্তিযুদ্ধের উপর প্রকাশিত বই প্রদশনীর মাধ্যমে। ১৯৭৪ সালে মুক্তধারা ও খান ব্রাদার্স যৌথভাবে অমর একুশে উপলক্ষ্যে সাতদিন ব্যাপী এ মেলা আয়োজন করে। এরপর থেকে বাংলাদেশ সরকার ও বাংলা একাডেমীর পৃষ্টপোষকতায় সারা ফেব্রুয়ারী মাসব্যাপী এ মেলা আয়োজিত হয়ে আসছে। এ মেলা আজ শুধু মেলাই নয়, বাংলা সাহিত্য চর্চার প্রাণকেন্দ্র।

Ekushey book fair is a core event of Bangladesh literature and culture. Everyday thousands people come in this month-long event. Prominent publishers and writers of Bangladesh publish books on the eve of the Ekushey Book Fair. In this year more than 2000 books has been published.

The fair was initiated by famous publisher “Chittoronjon Saha” at 1973 by displaying his books on Bangladesh, published in Calcutta during liberation war. In 1974 Muktadhara and Khan brothers jointly organized the event for 7 days. Since 1975 it has been organizing with the patronization of Bangla Academy and Bangladesh Government as a month-long event. In this event Bangla academy regularly organized seminar and discussion on contemporary Bangla literature and issues. Nowadays the event is playing important role in the development of Bangla literature and culture.

‘Merry Christmas’ Christmas day celebration in Dhaka, Bangladesh

As like as other countries, Christmas is one of the most important religious festival of the Christians believers. As the universal spirit is loving, serving and understanding others. In this day the followers forget the social class, inequality, resentment, differences and however share love with joy and happiness as did Jesus. Bangladeshi christian gather in churches and join in special pray for national and personal prosperity.

During Christmas Bangladeshi christian celebrate with family get-together however visit relatives and friends house of exchange love and best wishes. They follow rituals and give donation to the helpless neighbors and relatives.

Along with Christmas carols they decorate house and made special food, sweets and cakes in this day. The food and gift has been distributed in the party where typical Christmas greetings exchange.

The celebrations starts on Christmas Eve, normally with the singing of the carols. In Dhaka, a global event has been organized regularly in five star hotels like Sheraton Hotel and The Pan Pacific Sonargaon Hotel with exotic lighting and Christmas tree decoration. The hotels serve special menu with special price as well.

The Christmas day is the national holiday in Bangladesh. There is many misunderstanding and prejudice about Christian faith and practices in the Muslim community. But the young generational nowadays overcoming with the positive influence of global media and global culture. Muslim young generation also nowadays join with their christian friends.

Durgapuja, Bangladesh

 দূর্গা পূঁজা, বাংলাদেশ: Durgapuja is the biggest religious festival of Hindu, especially Bengali Hindu community. The ten days long festival has been celebrated every year in the middle of October. The Goddess ‘Durga’ is the mother of the universe. She represents the infinite power of the universe and a symbol of a female dynamism. Durga is the sign of Justice and Peace.

When demonic forces created imbalance, all gods were united and became one divine force called ‘Shakti’ or ‘Durga’. Goddess Durga killed the powerful demon ‘Oshur’ and his commanders to control the universe with goodness as God’s will.

This force is sculptured as Durga statue with ten armed hands. She is mostly shown with riding on a lion. However she has been gorgeously dressed up with royal red cloth, ornaments, smoothing eye, crown and luminous dark hair. The various tools in Her hands reflect the eminent supremacy of God.

After nine days worship with total heart and devotion Hindu believers feel the unity with God through Durga puja. They respect Durga as true mother and sacrifice the statue in river at tenth day which is know as ‘doshomi’ . In Bangladesh and India Durga puja nationally celebrate with official holiday.

Bishaw Estima

বিশ্ব এসতেমা: Estima, the biggest Muslim religious gathering in Bangladesh, however the second largest payer meeting of the world. In this non-partisan and non-political spiritual gathering, thousand of Muslim come from around the country and other Islamic countries as well. Every year it has been organized in the bank of Turag River of Tongi, Dhaka for looking the spiritual success. In the three days long prayerful gathering, the Islamic believers looks God’s bless, however repent for past mistakes and sins to get purification.

The gathering is known as “biswa estima” (World Muslim Congregation). In the year 2009 the Estima was held on 30 January to 1 February. Along with national leaders, the President and Prime Minster also join in the last pray which is known as ‘Akhari Monajat’. The common theme of the pray, is the spiritual success of humanity, world peace, national prosperity by pressing Allah and Prophet with highest devotion.
